Death of Fr Brian Reynolds

Picture
During the week we received the sad news from Ireland that Fr Brian Reynolds  had passed away on Wednesday. He was 81. Fr Brian was Assistant Parish Priest here in the 70s, when Fr Martin was a student. He was a shy, quiet man, but a diligent priest. He visited many homes in the parish, especially the homes of the poorer and more isolated parishioners. We kept in touch occasionally over the years, and he often spoke of his affection for Australia, and for St Dominic’s parish in particular. His funeral in Newbridge will be private due to the emergency regulations.  May he rest in peace.

A Requiem Mass was offered for Fr Brian on Monday morning (11 May)  at 7am, live streamed as usual on Facebook (http://fb.me/StDoms816 ) and on the “Liturgies” page of our website.

The banner at the top is a detail from the stained glass windows in the church.  The dog is an heraldic symbol of St Dominic. A legend tells that when his mother was pregnant, she dreamed that she gave birth to a dog, with a fiery torch in its mouth.  It ran around the world, setting it on fire.
There is also an old Latin pun.  "Domini canes" means "dogs of the Lord", while "Dominicani" means "Dominicans".
St Dominic was in fact named after St Dominic of Silos, sometime abbot of a famous Benedictine abbey near our saint's birthplace of Caleruega, Spain.  The name "Dominic" means "the Lord's man."
