St Dominic’s is a welcoming community of Catholic Christians who worship God and have an outward focus on evangelization and social justice. Welcome to St Dominic's Welcome from Father Paul Welcome to St Dominic’s, the Catholic Parish of Camberwell East! We are so pleased that you have found your way to us on-line and look forward to having you join us in every way in-person. St Dominic’s has been a local institution for more than a century, which is a tribute to the dedicated parishioners and divers Dominicans who have built up the Church in this part of Melbourne. We hope to continue their legacy of Catholic worship and charitable service in this place so that all may know the truth of Jesus Christ. Many Catholics have made St Dominic’s their home. Visitors to the Church will be able to appreciate William Patrick Connolly’s elegant design and Henry Clarke’s magnificent windows. Finally completed in 1958 and consecrated in 1960, St Dominic’s Church has been described as “a defiant finale to the Gothic Revival in Australia”. Even more importantly, St Dominic’s Church is a sign of eternal hope and an oasis of abiding peace in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. We are so proud of our Parish School, which celebrated its centenary just last year. Students are often to be seen with their families taking part in our common liturgical life and service opportunities. The Dominican Sisters, whose own centenary in Camberwell is this year, provided teachers for many years and make a valuable contribution even now. The Parish has been served by Dominican friars from the beginning. Please know you are in my daily prayers; do keep us and our mission in yours! Acerca de Justice and Peace Group About us The Justice & Peace group at St Dominic's has been part of the parish for over twenty years. We work to reflect on the issues of the day and to assist our parish to play its part in responding to the call of the Gospel to work for a more just and peace-filled world. In 2025, the group has been active in a number of areas: Cover items for 'The Dominican' on 10 matters relating to Justice & Peace; Recommendations for donations from the Parish Vodafone receipts to Caroline Chisholm Society, ACRATH, John Pierce Centre, Caritas (for Gaza), and Opening the Doors Foundation; facilitating parish involvement in an ecumenical mental health liturgy, and in food collection from supermarkets to assist local charities auspicing the monthly sale of coffee to benefit communities in Timor Leste; information provision through talks in the Parish Centre, the notice board and the website. In 2026, the areas of focus will continue as in 2025, but the group will work harder to support education under Dominican auspices in Solomon Islands, and to support bodies like Caritas in their advocacy for a more just world. Our group would welcome questions or feedback, and we would welcome new members - we meet once a month to discuss a range of current social issues. St Dominic’s is a welcoming community of Catholic Christians who worship God and have an outward focus on evangelization and social justice. Liturgical Ministries Sacristy Teams Our wonderful sacristy team work behind the scenes to set up for each Mass and for weddings and funerals. They also to take care of the linen and vestments used for the liturgy, which are washed weekly. The Sacristy Coordinator ensures that readers and extraordinary ministers are rostered, and that supplies such as altar breads, candles and incense are kept. Brass cleaning and flowers are taken care of by members of the team, as well as many other tasks carried out with quiet devotion. Please contact our parish office for more information in joining the team. Church Helpers The most visible part of St Dominic’s Parish life is the sacred liturgy. We welcome new members to our teams of helpers, who enable the priest and people attending our liturgies to worship God together in reverence and good order. Altar Servers St Dominic’s parish is always looking for young and matured aged men and women to volunteer and serve at the Altar of the Lord at Sunday liturgies. This ministry is a great opportunity for those, especially men, who are discerning a vocation to priestly life, as it immerses them more closely in the work of priests who represent the Sacrifice of Our Lord at the Altar. Anyone interested in this ministry is encouraged to contact our parish office. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Extraordinary ministers of holy communion assist our priests distributing Holy Communion during the Mass. Their important work also extends to taking the Sacrament to the sick and those in Age Care who no longer join our community in worship. The parish appreciates the work of extraordinary ministers and always welcomes new volunteers who serve the Church in this capacity. Anyone interested to be a part of this ministry is warmly encouraged to contact our office or Bob Solly, 0411 203 772 . Collectors The role of collectors supports the Mass during collection time. Please contact our office if you'd like to be on our collection roster. This program allows them to hear scripture proclaimed and explained on a level appropriate for their age group. Children are gathered and escorted from the Church to our parish centre immediately after Mass has commenced, where they will hear the Word proclaimed and engage in fun learning that will enrich their minds in faith before they are returned to their family in time for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. This program is offered during school terms only. If you would like your child to participate in our parish Children's Liturgy, please join us in worship at the 9.30am Sunday Mass. Music Ministry The primary purpose of music at St Dominic’s is to serve the expression of faith by our community. The Parish Hymn Book is Catholic Worship Book 2 which contains a wide range of hymns from the original Catholic Worship Book and the `As One Voice’ series. A choir is established for the Christmas and Easter liturgies and the Parish is interested in forming a choir to present music and lead the singing at 11 am Mass on Sunday. Music at 9.30 am Sunday Mass is presented by a group of singers and instrumentalists. Singing at other Masses, except 8 am with no music, is accompanied on the Organ. Cantors and lead singers are sought for all Masses involving music. Those interested in being part of the Music Ministry in any of the roles outlined are invited to contact the Parish Office: secretary@stdominics.org.au Readers At St Dominic's we are committed to training volunteers to proclaim the Word of God at weekday and Sunday liturgies with reverence and devotion. Divine Mercy Adoration Group The Divine Mercy group meets on Fridays from 10.45 am to 11.45 am. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for adoration and prayers for Clergy, the Church, young people, nations and the world will be said. There are also talks presented on most First Fridays by Dominican Priests or other times by a Dominican Brother. Jesus said to St Faustina Kowalska: Tell the world about My mercy and love. - Special Appeal 2026 | St Dominic's ParishSt Dominic's Church Camberwell East
St Dominic's Parish St Dominic's Camberwell East Special Appeal 2026 New Heating System - New Sacrament Tower We're larger and livelier! Special Appeal Info This is an exciting time for our parish. Each year for the past four years, our parish has grown. A great indicator of that growth is when you mention that you’re noticing more people at Mass. Each of you is God’s good news for Camberwell. The exceptional regrowth of our parish over the past few years corresponds to a greater participation in ministries and membership opportunities. Not only is our parish larger, it’s also livelier. Thanks be to God for you! The time is right, therefore, for a special appeal to you. HEATING SYSTEM AND SACRAMENT TOWER From Palm Sunday to Pentecost, your parish is asking you to make a substantial contribution to two important forthcoming works: a new heating system and a new sacrament tower. Already there is great support for these works. The Prior has signalled the friars’ support for half of the Sacrament Tower cost. Other pledges have also been made, and interest by word of mouth is high. You are invited to contribute to your parish for this appeal. Donors of $1000 and more will be forever acknowledged by name on a remembrance plaque to be installed. Donations in memory of deceased loved ones will be specially noted. AN APPEAL IN FAITH Please also pray for the success of the appeal. It promises to draw together many of our people from different generations and backgrounds, each with their own personal story at St Dominic’s. “Am I living as bread broken for others? Do I share what I am and have? Am I an instrument of communion or of division?” - Pope Leo XIV HEATING SYSTEM SAFER Our beautiful church needs a safe, energy-saving, cost-effective system which keeps us warm in winter during Masses and other liturgies. INSTALLATION The equipment for the new heating system is being provided to us at cost, thanks to the generous family proprietors of Warmset Australia. Installation is set to begin after Easter 2026. HOW IT WORKS Heating is put between a layer of insulation and a laminate wood floor. Radiant platform heating starts from the concept of warming people without having to heat the entire interior. Sacrament Tower During his recent parish visitation, Archbishop Comensoli urged us to relocate the tabernacle on the main axis of the Church. The Sacrament Tower is designed by Sidney Rofe. It will be made from Qld maple to match the sanctuary's existing joinery. Make your pledge today Your Name Your Phone Number Your Email If this is a gift in memory, what is the name? - This Week in the Parish | St Dominic's ParishSt Dominic's Church Camberwell East
St Dominic's Parish St Dominic's Camberwell East THE WORKS OF MERCY: BURYING AND PRAYING To make a good Lent, three acts receive pride of place: almsgiving, prayer, and fasting (Matthew 6:1-18). This Lent, we shall explore the many ways we can undertake the first of those, almsgiving. Each week, we consider some corporal and spiritual works of mercy. This week, it is to bury the dead and to pray for the living and the dead. Burying the dead was added to the list of corporal works of mercy early in the Second Christian Millennium, no doubt because of the many threats to public health. Corpses in the street of those who suffered a lonely, agonising death demanded a Christian response. Nowadays and in this part of the world, responsibility for burying the dead is largely outsourced. In the main, funeral directors do great work for our families. Many times I have been grateful for their reverence and care for the dead. On occasion, the company has borne the funeral costs of someone who died without family or means. Thus, in a remote way, the funeral costs we incur can be said to contribute to the corporal work of mercy, burying the dead. Of all the works of mercy we have seen over the course of this Lent, the one we shall all need ourselves is prayer for the dead. Other works of mercy may or may not apply during our living days, but we shall all become the Church’s beggars in death. If you have been indifferent to the call for almsgiving and merciful service, perhaps self-interest alone will finally lead you to act. For if you pray for the holy souls in Purgatory, they may yet pray for you in Heaven. It is easy enough to pray for those we have loved in life, those with whom we were pleasantly acquainted. But what of those we once were at school with or worked with? What of those we met only once or twice? You might be the only person who would remember to pray for them. This call to pray for the dead will be all the more urgent when we consider how many Catholics are dying without the sacraments or receiving a Catholic funeral. Many are the times a family has not thought to call a priest at the end. Many are the times a cancellation has come through for a booked funeral, if they even get that far. Add to this the problem of access to the sacraments. I recently attended an aged care facility whose local clergy had told them not to call for last rites: the staff had been told the local clergy are too busy. Praying for the dead need not be elaborate. So long as it is heartfelt, God will hear. The practice of visiting a church is a venerable one, as is making the sign of the cross as we pass by. You might consider offering the first Hail Mary of the day for the dead. The holy souls await your prayers, you who can do all that they would like to do but are now unable. How will you show them mercy? May the Lord restore them to good health again. We also pray for those who were visited this week by members of the SVdP Society. Propers of the Mass Palm Sunday Entrance Antiphon: Six days before the Passover, when the Lord came into the city of Jerusalem, the children ran to meet him; in their hands they carried palm branches and with a loud voice cried out: * Hosanna in the highest! Blessed are you, who have come in your abundant mercy! O gates, lift high your heads; grow higher, ancient doors. Let him enter, the king of glory! Who is this king of glory? He, the Lord of hosts, he is the king of glory. * Hosanna in the highest! Blessed are you, who have come in your abundant mercy! Responsorial Psalm: My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Gospel Acclamation: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, king of endless glory! Christ became obedient for us even to death dying on the cross. Funerals Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes i n me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11: 25-26). A Christian’s death is not just a departure from this life, but also a passage to the next because through baptism they are united with the risen Christ. Full of hope in the resurrection, we welcome enquiries from bereaved families about celebrating the funeral of a loved one here at St Dominic’s. We encourage you to make contact with the parish office to begin making the necessary arrangements. A priest will be able to consult with the family about specific arrangements and also attend the cemetery (or crematorium with burial of the ashes at a later time). O God, who have set a limit to this present life so as to open up an entry into eternity, we humbly beseech you, that by the grace of your mercy you may command the names of your servants to be inscribed in the book of life.
